LIVING IN THE SUBURBS
The noisy neighbours' leaf blower
always makes me feel at home
and that dog over the back fence that just won’t stop barking
guess he hates just being on his own
the catcher keeps falling off the lawn mower
that old vista engine’s starting to miss
and I just remembered that I forgot that it was bin night
in this suburban bliss.
Living In The Suburbs
You’ve got everything you need
Living In The Suburbs
Some might say it’s the great Australian dream.
The kids are riding on their longboards
all the way along Alexander avenue
dodging the morning traffic
as they make their way to school
the SUV’s and the four wheel drives
sit like giant cane toads
well they’re everywhere through this whole estate
just blocking up the roads
Living In The Suburbs
You’ve got everything you need
Living In The Suburbs
Some might say it’s the great Australian dream.
The city lights are shining brightly
trying to entice me
I’m sitting here in peak hour
on the South Eastern Arterial
at least you get to catch up on the radio
and all their comedy material
the Wellington road turn off is just up ahead
but being stuck here can be hell
it’s probably gonna be bumper to bumper
all the way down to the Stamford Hotel

UPWEY
Up Upwey way
its where I like to stay
you can go walk your dog
just not on the football ground
when you’re in Upwey
the rest of the world seems far away
you may not know about this place
and they’d prefer to keep it that way
well you can order your coffee down the main street
while you window shop for guitars
you can walk the length of Glenfern road
just watch out for the cars
the local fire brigade is having it’s annual jumble sale
while the folks over at the Fat Goat
are serving up an ale
Up Upwey way
its where I like to stay
you can go walk your dog
just not on the football ground
when you’re in Upwey
the rest of the world seems far away
you may not know about this place
and they’d prefer to keep it that way
that water tanks’ the land mark
it sits high up on the hill
I’ve never been able to quite find exactly where it is
but i’ll keep searching still
the pretty birds that fly around
well you can hand feed them the seed
they glide on pass the skate park
and then through Tin Pan alley
Up Upwey way
its where I like to stay
you can catch up with some old friends
outside the IGA
when you’re in Upwey
the rest of the world seems far away
you may never have heard of this place
and they’d prefer to keep it that way
you’ll begin to feel a change
when you climb up that mad mile
you’ll begin to feel a change
when you climb up that mad mile
to commemorate Anzac day
you know they do it very well
they start the march down near the round a bout
and end up at the RSL
and once a year you can hear the cheer
when those billy carts race by
you can sign up for the local football team
while lunching on a pie
In Upwey
There’s nowhere else I’d rather stay
you can go walk your dog
just not on the football ground
when you’re in Upwey
the rest of the world seems far away
you may not know about this place
and they’d prefer to keep it that way
that is of course unless you’re here to stay

STREAMING DOWN THE WING
Bleary eyed Sunday morning
waking up at 6am
it’s a big day up ahead for the DRJFL under 10’s
my boy’s wearing the number 9
he’s the little blonde haired cherub faced kid
the anticipation’s growing
but I think it’s more in me than him
coz it’s the highlight of the week
it’s such a beautiful thing
when I get to see my boy
Streaming down the wing
Big Monkey on the BBQ
cooks the best bacon and egg rolls in the league
that’s just what the Woori Yallock locals have led us to believe
well I’m rostered on for goal umpire
my son he starts on the bench
it will be half time before the fog will lift
I’m six inches deep in mud and stench
but it’s the highlight of the week
it’s such a beautiful thing
when I get to see my boy
Streaming down the wing
there’s not a thing
quite like the joy
that your children bring
well the coach was no Barrassi
and the captain he sure was no James Hird
at the main break boys ate oranges
while the mum’s and dad’s would hang off every word
some days my child was hardly sighted
others he had the ball on a string
I didn’t care either way
when I saw my young lad streaming down the wing
well it’s the highlight of the week
it’s such a beautiful thing
when I get to see my boy
Streaming down the wing
when I get to see
that little blonde haired cherub faced scallywag
streaming down the wing
when I get to see my boy
either lose or win.

NOTHING EVER HAPPENS IN SCORESBY
Nothing ever happens in Scoresby
that’s the way it’s always been
you’ve gotta catch a bus to get to a train
and now they’ve even closed down Caribbean Gardens
there’s not even a watering hole
you’ve got to go up Wheelers Hill
nothin ever happens in Scoresby
it never has and it never will
except for that time
that Lady Di and Prince Charles drove on by
the whole town lined Stud Road
I couldn’t see much but I tried
nothin ever happens in Scoresby
but my memory still remains
as a kid I’d search for broken push bikes at the tip
then drag them home down Cathies Lane
but I’d never go passed Mrs. P’s shop
I was too scared of the tough’s hanging round
they’s always want your money for pinball
or anything you had hanging round
then around 79 what an exciting time
from a distance in the dark
every kid in the neighbourhood swore they could hear
KISS from VFL Park.
Nothing ever happens in Scoresby
cept on the weekends there we would play
we’d hire skates from Rollerama
well they’re the same ones used to this day
I’m kind of glad the place hasn’t changed much
it just wouldn’t be the same
nothing ever happens in Scoresby
and I hope forever it remains
nothing ever happens in Scoresby
and I hope it always stays that way.

Same Colours
03:43
|

SAME COLOURS
well I was just a suburban lad
not much older than 15
I hadn’t been very far from home without my mum and dad
I had heroes a plenty
from Paul Stanley to KB
and I wanted to see my team run out at the MCG
so I got myself a travel card
and waited at the stop down the road
and when the 753 to Glen Waverley
pulled around the corner at the bottom of my street
I could see you sitting in the back row seat
wearing the same colours as me
you were wearing the same colours as me
we looked much the same
you were a little bit older but still green
with a nod and a wink you asked
how do you think we’ll go today ?
I said if the General can Tap it down to Flea
and move the ball quick down to Disco then we’ll see
and when the 753 to Glen Waverley
pulled up at the station for the train to Flinders Street
we walked along the platform
and seemed to bond instantly
we were wearing the same colours you see
you were wearing the same colours as me
you’ll never know
which way your path will go
or how you’ll meet a friend
it’s over 30 years since that day
we’re a lot older, now in our 50s
but the conversation’s still the same
as we head into the game
now we talk of Cotchy,Dusty and Jack
and do you think we can go back to back
as we march along Brunton Avenue with the Tiger Army
we never forget where we’re from
and to be thankful of what has become
and if that 753 to Glen Waverley
hadn’t pulled around the corner at the bottom of my street
I wouldn’t see you there in the back row seat
wearing the same colours as me
you were wearing the same colours as me
wearing the same colours as me.

The Kids Don't Lie

THE KIDS DON’T LIE
The Greater City Of Knox Christmas Carols of 01
was where I nearly lost my nerve
they said there could be ten thousand people in attendance
all crammed in at Wally Tew Reserve
I was booked as a children’s entertainer
in my bright orange pants and cap
well I had to follow old Humphrey B Bear
I was scared and dripping like a tap
Well it was starting to feel quite real as the announcer called my name
the stage was set, the show was mine to steal
I was just hoping I wouldn’t trip, split my pants or break my hip
a million thoughts kept rushing through my brain
from Heads and Shoulders to Bob the Builder
well I gave them every song I knew they liked
cozl I had my very own 3 year old at home
I knew all about the Wiggles and High 5
coz the kids don’t lie
they say it like it is
no don’t you cry
no don’t show any fear
or else they’ll kick you in the shins
tell you that you’re fat, say that you can’t dance
and you’re not as tough as my dad
well I was buzzing with adrenalin , the show was over in a flash
I had to rush off and do another gig
I set up on the lawns at the Mooney Valley Racecourse
as events go, this too was kind of big
I had a mascot named Matilda, the fun loving kangaroo
but when she came through the crowd on her way up to the stage
the cheeky rascals ripped the head right off the suit.
coz the Kids Don’t Lie
they say it like it is
no don’t you cry
no don’t show any fear
or else they’ll kick you in the shins
tell you that you’re fat, say that you can’t dance
and you’re not as tough as my dad
at the end of every set
I’d blow bubbles in the air
what a great way to finish off the night
but this time it didn’t work
and all that came out was a soapy spirt
that shot right into this little fella’s eye
he went rushing off crying to his mother
I couldn’t pack my gear up quick enough
I’d seen the Northern Suburbs a few times before
and I knew that the mums here could be tough
well the Kids Don’t Lie
they say it like it is
no don’t you cry
no don’t show any fear
or else they’ll kick you in the shins
tell you that you’re fat, say that you can’t dance
and you’re not as tough as my dad.

Roadtrip To Metung

|

ROADTRIP TO METUNG
I think it’s time for a getaway
haven’t been anywhere for over a year
pack the car, pair the phone to the Bluetooth
grab the snacks and the dog, the family road trip
It’s not that bad once you get through Pakenham
Nar Nar Goon is where the traffic dies down
little one in the back well she’s asking for Macca’s
we pretend we didn’t see the golden arches at the turn off to Moe
I could spend the whole day
in the beer garden down at the Metung Hotel
if you’ve been there yourself then you’ll know it too well
it’s a place where your mind drifts away
you forget about it all
There’s lots of lovely towns along this happy trail
from Rosedale to Stratford take the shortcut round Sale
we’ll stop and get supplies at the pub in Bairnsdale
we’re in luck, we’ve had a good run today
watch your speed as you pass through Nicholson
I’ve been don’t there before
I was dreaming about the boats heading up along the Tambo
I had my foot to the floor
I could spend the whole day
in the beer garden down at the Metung Hotel
if you’ve been there yourself then you’ll know it too well
it’s a place where your mind drifts away
you forget about it all
you forget about it all
coming into town, Kings Cove on the right
the Boardwalk up ahead
well it’s such a delight
the Dolphins swim freely and the Pelicans take flight
nearly there, I can almost taste the beer
when you feel the bumps underneath your tyres
you know that it’s not far to go
well Bancrofts is vibing and the grassland is packed
but there’s once place that I’ve gotta go
coz I could spend the whole day
in the beer garden down at the Metung Hotel
if you’ve been there yourself then you’ll know it too well
it’s a place where your mind drifts away
you forget about it all
you forget about it all

Thank God You Were There
03:47
|
|||
THANK GOD YOU WERE THERE
well you could hardly reach the pedals
in that old white XF Ford
as the tyres slipped on the tram tracks
heading homeward down Bridge road
after another drunken solo gig
where no-one seemed to care
you made sure I got home safely
and I thank god you were there
from then on I would see you
from Brighton to the Hills
you knew I needed someone
to help me fix my ills
and that time after the Nighthawk bar
when my heart laid bare
it was you who called the ambulance
and I thank god you were there
well I’m not sure where I would ever be
if not for you
I like the way you care
and I thank god you were there
that last scare was enough
to help me change my ways
and you did it with me
we haven’t smoked for 3052 days
although nobody’s perfect
and at times we curse and swear
I’m glad you’re still beside me
and I thank god you were there
well I’m not sure where I would ever be
if not for you
I like the way you care
and I thank god you were there
many years have passed now
and we’ve lived a lovely life
it was christmas eve that year
I asked you to be my wife
at times it hasn’t been easy
with the baggage that I share
but I’m glad you stand beside me
and I thank god you were there
well I’m not sure where I would ever be
if not for you
I like the way you care
and I thank god you were there

Radio Show

|

RADIO SHOW
just a boy in his bedroom with his C90 tapes
making compilations, from ELO to Dire Straits
the radio was his companion, It’s when he never felt alone
but never could he have imagined, where his life was yet to go
he got a job at 3AK in the record library
for a young man of 16 it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be
so he left and worked at Robbie’s collecting trolleys from the carpark
but destiny was calling and it was time to make his mark
Hold on Tight to your dreams
coz you just never know
from one day working the supermarket floor
to next your own Radio Show
so he bought himself a Holden Shuttle, and he drove to make ends meet
of a night he’d go to radio school, learning how to speak
then one day his big break came, he got a job midnight to dawn
then from Hamilton to Hobart, Gold FM, He worked them all
Hold on Tight to your dreams
coz you just never know
from one day a delivery man
to next your own Radio Show
sometimes it’s hard to know
if anybody’s out there
is there anybody out there ?
I won’t forget the phone call, the day he told me he was sick
he was on air at the time, still so professional, so slick
you couldn’t hear it in his voice and the public couldn’t see
he’d only just won an RA Award, I guess that was his destiny
Hold on Tight to your dreams
coz you just never know
from one day your own Radio Show
to a memory we’ll never let go

The Way It Was Then
04:14
|

THE WAY IT WAS THEN
Bill Lowrie was a hard man
a Labourer on the wharf, a good Footballer for St Kilda till he got called up for war
his wife Molly and their unborn baby, was who he left behind
not knowing if he’d make it back, or if he’d lose his mind
Oh That’s just the Way It Was Then
After four years he did return with a Military Medal
for a young man growing up in the slums of Port Melbourne
this was something kind of special
as the years rolled by and the family grew to fourteen hungry kids
no matter how hard Bill would work, they’d always hit the skids
Oh That’s Just The Way It Was Then
you did what you could
you didn’t know any different
Well Bill was paid a pittance and had to fight for the work that he did
so wife Molly went off to find work too, Help feed the kids
the girls would have to sleep wearing old coats as blankets, Five in a bed
while the boys bunkered out on the verandah, no less warmth than in a shed
Oh That’s Just The Way It Was Then
you did what you could
you didn’t know any different
Oh, asking the local factory workers for food
was something the kids had to do
but that’s just the way it was then
That waterfront dispute of 1928 was no way to treat a war hero
what a low down right disgrace
Bill was standing side by side along Princes Pier Dock
when a bullet fired right at him from the rifle of a cop
Oh That’s Just the way It was Then
when you made a stand
you never knew what you’re gettin
Oh but no-one could understand
how to fix a broken man
but that’s just the way it was then
All the stories that my Nan told me
growing up in that family
were only of love and laughter
That Just The Way it was Then.

In The Sun (acoustic)

IN THE SUN
I lie awake and reminisce
of younger days, a love’s first kiss
we’d find a way to always seize the day
now we’re getting older, our memories fade
but there are things that stay the same
like the way it feels when the season’s change
you’ll feel like the sun when the rain has gone
I can’t wait till Summer comes again
walking on the beach
holding hands and falling in the sand
we’ll be having fun
we’ll find a place to live
In The Sun
well I remember those days in Ocean Grove
Zinc cream, suntan, Rip Curl clothes
with off shore winds the boys would ride the waves
and when the day was done
we’d share the night with everyone
I can’t wait till Summer comes again
walking on the beach
holding hands and falling in the sand
we’ll be having fun
we’ll find a place to live
In The Sun
from the early morning light
when I see the clear blue sky
I’m in paradise, I’m forever young
I’m chasing the sun

Jason Vorherr Melbourne, Australia
Jason Vorherr is from Melbourne and is well known as the bass guitarist for Australian music icon Daryl Braithwaite. However, in his own right Jason is now proving to be quite the story-telling singer-songwriter. His songs are a charming look at suburban Australian life with a country/folk style. Jason has been compared to the likes of Paul Kelly and Michael Waugh. ... more
